Lucy Powell has triumphed in the Labour deputy leadership election, beating out her challenger Bridget Phillipson.

Ex-Commons leader until a reshuffle in a recent reorganization, was largely viewed as the frontrunner throughout the campaign. She obtained 87,407 votes, making up 54% of the cast ballots, whereas Phillipson got 73,536. Eligible voter turnout was recorded at 16.6%.

The decision was declared on Saturday after balloting that many regarded as a measure for party adherents on Labour's trajectory under its current leadership. Phillipson, the education secretary, was perceived as the preferred choice of government circles.

Shared Policy Stances

Both contenders advocated for the elimination of the cap on benefits for third children, a policy that caused a insurgency in parliament weeks after Labour took power and is deeply unpopular among the party base.

Triumphant Remarks from Powell

During her winning remarks spoken in front of the party leader and the home secretary, Powell hinted at errors from the government and stated that Labour had not been assertive enough against Nigel Farage’s Reform UK.

She asserted, “We cannot succeed by competing with Reform.”

She exhorted the leadership to listen to the grassroots and parliamentarians, a number of whom have had the whip withdrawn since the party entered government for defying the party on issues such as benefit outlays and the two-child benefit cap.

We should communicate a more definite feeling of our mission, whose side we’re on, and of our Labour values and beliefs. She additionally commented: “Even as we achieve numerous benefits … the public believes that this government is lacking courage in executing the kind of change we vowed. I will advocate for our Labour values and boldness in each endeavor.

“It starts with us wrestling back the political narrative and establishing the focus more forcefully. Because to be frank, we’ve permitted Farage and his allies to control it.”

She remarked: “Discord and animosity are growing, unrest and disappointment commonplace, the yearning for transformation eager and tangible. The public is looking to other sources for solutions, and we as the Labour party, as the governing force, need to come forth and confront this.

“We have this one big chance to demonstrate that progressive, mainstream politics really can transform lives for the better.”

Reaction from Leader and Party Difficulties

The party leader applauded Powell’s success, and admitted the challenges faced by Labour, a day after the party was defeated in the Welsh parliament to a rival party.

He cited a comment made by a Conservative MP who last weekend claimed she believed “a large number of people” living legally in the UK should have their right to stay withdrawn and “go home” to establish a more “culturally coherent group of people”.

The leader stated it demonstrated that the Conservatives and Reform wanted to take Britain to a “very dark place”.

“Our responsibility, whoever we are in this party, is to bring together every single person in this country who is against that ideology, and to beat it, for good.

“This week we received another signal of just how urgent that task is. A poor result in Wales. I accept that, but it is a reminder that people need to look out their window and witness transformation and revitalization in their locality, opportunities for their children, revitalized state services, the addressed living costs.”

Election Context and Turnout

The outcome was closer than expected; a recent poll had forecast Powell would obtain 58% of ballots cast. The turnout of 16.6% was markedly lower than the previous deputy leadership election in 2020, which saw 58.8%.

Members and union affiliates comprised the 970,642 people qualified to participate.

The contest grew increasingly contentious over the past month and a half. Recently, Powell was labeled “the Momentum candidate” and Phillipson made remarks saying her competitor would harm the party's electoral chances.

The election was called after the ex-deputy resigned last month when she was determined to have underpaid stamp duty on a property purchase.

Addressing in parliament this week – the maiden speech she had done so since resigning following a report by the prime minister’s ethics adviser – the former deputy leader told MPs she would pay “any taxes owed”.

In contrast to her predecessor, Powell will not assume the role of deputy prime minister, with the position having already been given to another senior figure.

Powell is regarded as being strongly associated with the mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, who was alleged to have launching a leadership bid in all but name before the party’s previous assembly.

During the campaign, Powell often referenced “errors” made by the party on issues such as the winter fuel allowance.
