Major Web Failure Affects Many Online Platforms and Apps

A widespread internet disruption has disrupted many online platforms and mobile apps worldwide, with users noting issues connecting to the web after problems at Amazon’s web hosting service.

The affected platforms include Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with several Amazon-managed services like its primary shopping platform and the Ring doorbell company.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was affected along with its subsidiaries Halifax and the Scottish bank, with further notifications of issues using the HM Revenue and Customs site on that morning. Also in the UK, many Ring device owners turned to networks to state their home gadgets were malfunctioning.

In the UK alone, reports of issues on particular platforms reached the many thousands for each platform.

Amazon reported that the outage started in the east coast of the America at the cloud division, a section that supplies essential web framework for a host of companies, who utilize capacity on the company's servers. AWS is the world’s largest web hosting system.

Shortly after midnight (PDT) in the United States (8am BST), officials reported “higher problem frequencies and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the US. The ripple effect seemed to disrupt services around the world, with the outage tracking website showing outages with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that tracks internet outages, additionally noted a rise in issues on Monday morning, and numerous instances found in Virginia, the region of the eastern US data center where the company stated the outage started.
