Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's ODI Team to Face Team India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-game ODI series facing India, as in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a unexpected selection.
Recent Form Result in Omission
Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international side after being dismissed for one in his two batting efforts during the top-end series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI batting appearances.
The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and amassed 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Changes
Recent performances suggest of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his ODI debut in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a return to the Test team as Australia seek a solution to their opening batting issues.
Pace Returns and Fitness Updates
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after having time off since excelling for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Fixtures
Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a 2-0 series win last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from October 29.
