Student Society President-Elect Removed Following Charlie Kirk Posts
The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after losing a no-confidence vote that followed his controversial online comments about the conservative activist.
The vote against the student leader achieved the required two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The controversy began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in the United States.
According to sources, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.
The student leader is also reported to have written in a WhatsApp chat with other members seeming to welcome the incident.
Election Results
The vote of confidence was conducted over the recent days, with results announced on this week.
Official notices showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting no confidence, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The announcement stated that the president-elect was deemed to have resigned in following the society's regulations.
Election Controversies
Voting operations were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a statement, the student claimed that the vote tally had been stopped because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response unequivocally denied that any person acting for George had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Continuing Controversy
The student stated that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as the elected leader.
His comment added that George was "grateful and honored to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Opponents have said that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Responses
On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an open letter to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The letter accused the society of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the killing of a political opponent".
The communication warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, supporters would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had earlier condemned the student's comments after Kirk's death and confirmed that concerns filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of multiple members to debate with the activist at the society in spring.
