The artist has handed over the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the Music Venues Trust, which works to preserve the Britain's small concert spaces.

Fender was given the cheque on mid-October as his third album People Watching was declared the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

He has decided to hand the money over to the MVT, in recognition of the essential function grassroots venues played in his beginning days.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing this success if it wasn't for all the shows I played around the region, and further afield, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These spaces are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these locations have shut down – about one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Recently, major artists such as the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to support the industry, by applying a modest fee to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

Sam Fender also joined in, raising over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to assist numerous grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money supported spaces that were facing imminent closure due to challenges caused by flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, court cases and neighbor objections.

Some locations obtained funding support in upgrading facilities and technical equipment that helped performers and concertgoers.

"The concept that money from shows in major spaces supports the smaller venues, where it begins for artists like me, is just logical," the star has commented.

They are among the artists who contributed their Mercury Prize prize money to charity

The musician is among several artists to contribute his Mercury Prize funds to charitable organizations.

When they won the prize in the year 1996 for their album Different Class, lead singer Jarvis Cocker stated that the act would give their prize money to the organization War Child.

That year, artist she divided her bounty across several good causes, like the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I gave a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed updated gear," Ms Dynamite told the media.

Two years ago, they gave their funds to the community center that nurtured their group, alongside other local music groups.

Also 1994 winners M People gave their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was identified with the illness.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," stated artist Small. "The money was the bonus but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our winning affected the lives of others."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved two local spots in that region, by transferring them to community ownership.

The first in the city and The Croft in the city were acquired under the public acquisition scheme, which is supported by the arts council and enthusiasts who buy "ownership units" in the venues.
