The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
