Thomas Tuchel Criticizes Home Fan Atmosphere Despite Dominant Win Over Wales.
The England head coach expressed his disappointment that the Three Lions team did not enjoy more support from the Wembley crowd during their decisive friendly win against Wales on Thursday night.
Tuchel was pleased to see his squad maintain their good form, with finishes from Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Saka inside the opening quarter deciding the game. Yet, he was unhappy with the energy at the national stadium.
“We had one and a half sessions to prepare against a drilled team and we excelled,” Tuchel commented. “It could have been five goals ahead at the break. We missed the additional ones. There was little noise. We didn’t get support back from the stands. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you deliver in 20 minutes? We prevented them get away. If you hear just the Welsh supporters for 30 minutes, it’s regrettable because the team warranted better encouragement today.”
“I support my words. We cannot do more than leading three goals up in a derby. I hoped for a little more support in periods where it is challenging.”
“In the second half, to support us, there was excessive backing for the opposition. It could have helped us to recharge, but that’s football and that is it.”
Selection Choices Vindicated by Performance
Apart from risking a fight with fans, Tuchel also caused a stir by excluding Jude Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. However the choice was justified by Rogers delivering another standout performance in the No 10 position and scoring his first international goal.
“That’s his style,” the head coach said. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is fighting for his place.”
Bellamy Seeks Improvement from Loss
Craig Bellamy expressed hope that Wales, who face Belgium in a crucial qualifying match on Monday, improve after their poor performance in the opening period.
“This is why I scheduled this game,” the manager stated. “I wanted to assess our current level. What are our ambitions? Who do we want to be? Today fills me with inspiration.”
Fitness Worry for Striker
Ollie Watkins was withdrawn at the break after colliding with a post and will be a doubt when the national team face Latvia in Riga in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
